As the clock struck midnight on 31 December, many of us will have made a resolution that 2018 will mark a new chapter in our lives. The job that has never felt quite right will be left behind for a career that genuinely excites us; the business we’ve always dreamed of starting will finally become a reality; our roles as a husband, wife or parent will be reinvigorated by a fresh sense of connection and meaning. This will be the year we leave our mark on the world!
However, as we approach the end of January, many resolutions – made with such good intentions – may already feel unachievable. In the cold light of day, the demands of a hectic new year appear to leave us with no option but to shelve those dreams.
But does it need to be this way?
What if we all have a purpose that is entirely possible to fulfill, but have simply never been given the tools to find it?
What if 2018 is the year when you find your purpose?
Why is finding our purpose so important?
A life without purpose is like a journey without a destination. Knowing our purpose, however, is like having our own personal Sat-Nav: it gives us our destination, informs our direction of travel, and enables us to course-correct when we’re off-track. Suddenly we know which opportunities to say yes or no to when we reach a crossroads; which paths will take us where we want to go; and which will lead us astray.
Finding our purpose is also crucial if we aspire to lead a fulfilling and meaningful life – the natural result of purposeful living. We may previously have tried to find fulfillment or meaning through our career, financial or other success, but unless such goals have been aligned with our purpose, we’ll have found ourselves coming up short.
Five steps to finding your purpose:
While the elements that constitute a purposeful and meaningful life vary for each of us, the steps to finding our way are universal. If you are interested in understanding and moving through each of these steps with guidance and associated resources, I will be delivering an On Purpose masterclass in Chislehurst on 20 February. The five steps are:
Step one: identify your core values
Step two: identify your strengths
Step three: identify your passions
Step four: find your element
Step five: find your purpose
What now?
If you’re keen to continue this journey, I would be delighted to welcome you to The Old Chapel in Chislehurst on the evening of 20 February for my On Purpose masterclass.
